Skydiving & Common Aircraft

Perhaps you've thought about jumping out of an airplane, either with a friend or simply with skydiving instructors and you 'd like to learn more. Parachuting describes the process of skydiving out of an airplane and coasting slightly to the earth. While it may feel like flying, skydiving is a bit different. The degree of security provided by having a parachute is the predominate difference. Your chute slows your descent, not only making your freefall safer, but also supplying you with a beautiful canopy tour thousands of feet in the air!

They call the first jump a "tandem skydive", due to the presence of a skydive instructor. Your safe, graceful landing will be provided by this expert instructor who will fasten your parachute prior to take off and tell you when to deploy it during freefall. This instructor will dive with you, free fall with you and land with you. You can feel secure knowing that your life is in the hands of a FAA licensed instructor with hundreds (if not thousands) of successful skydives under his belt.

Wanting to know what altitude you will be skydiving from?

The plane has to reach an altitude of 10,000 to 14,000 feet before you can exit. That means, you will be jumping from almost 3 miles above the ground! This elevation cap exists for your safety, any higher and you would require an oxygen mask!

If you are nervous about the parachute releasing you can rest assured, you will be taught in depth on what to expect!

If your primary parachute gives you difficulty, you have a little extra time. This reserve chute is instantly activated and released should you and your tandem master hit a low elevation without the primary parachute functioning. At some locations, a "static line jump" may be used for parachute release training. During this exercise, you jump from the plane with a safe and secure tether to the aircraft.

Typical Skydiving Aircraft

Light planes such as the Cessna and Otter are put into action most often for skydiving. Aside from recreational sport use, light aircraft are excellent for freight transport and aerial photography. Nevertheless, light sport aircraft predominately are used for parachuting as they are much quicker than commercial aircraft, often taking a load of skydivers up every 15 to 20 minutes!

Depending on the power of the engine, it could take as little as 10 or 20 minutes to arrive at diving height. Unsurprisingly, the size of the engine determines how quickly it gets up to this point. The speedier planes, like the King Airs with PT6A-20 engines, are regarded as the fastest in the world in their ascent.

Not only do these types of aircraft ascend rapidly, they can hold up to 15 people. {The King Airs, however, are only the second most popular aircraft used for diving.} The most popular dual and single engine planes for skydivers are the Havilland Canada DHC-6-Twin Otter, and the Pacific Aerospace PAC P-750 XSTOL, respectively. Whether piston or turbine powered, frequently used planes for skydiving tend to have wide, sizable doors. Turbine and piston-powered planes are separated by a key difference: turbine planes are lighter in weight and use their fuel more efficiently. While they provide a similar horsepower as a typical piston engine, crafts with turbine engines are typically more expensive.
